Beasts of Burden by Sarah Langan

It was July 4, 1876, when Master Brown opened his door to the foundling swaddled in wet rags. They’d frozen to his backside and chest like stuck lettuce leaves. Brown carried the infant inside, and fed him mare’s milk while warming him by a fire until his blue skin returned to pink. The birthmark at the small of the child’s neck was overlapping triple 6’s. These Brown hid with mud until his thick, black hair grew in.
